Many women delay their annual mammogram because they assume it will take too much time. The truth? A screening mammogram is remarkably quick and can easily fit into your lunch break or busy morning.
At The Breast Center of Maple Grove, the average screening visit takes around 20 minutes from check-in to completion.
When you know what to expect during a mammogram, the experience feels simple, efficient, and empowering.
Breaking Down the Mammogram Timeline: From Check-in to Completion
While the actual imaging is very fast, your total time at our center includes several stages to ensure the highest quality of care and patient comfort.
Check-in and Preparation (10–15 Minutes)
When you arrive, you’ll complete a brief check-in process. We recommend arriving a few minutes early if the paperwork needs updating.
You’ll then be escorted to a private changing area or directly into the mammography suite. Before imaging, you’ll be asked to remove deodorant, powder, or lotion from the underarm and breast area, as these products can affect image clarity. (If you forget, we provide wipes.)
We offer warm robes to help you feel comfortable while you wait — small details that make a big difference.
The Imaging Process (5–10 Minutes)
The actual mammogram takes only a few minutes.
A certified technologist will gently position your breast and apply compression to obtain clear images. Compression lasts just a few seconds per image and is necessary to reduce motion and improve accuracy.
Our center uses advanced 3D mammography (tomosynthesis), which allows the imaging arm to move in a slight arc over the breast to capture multiple images at once. This improves cancer detection and reduces the need for callbacks.
Most patients are surprised at how quickly this part of the appointment goes.
Wrap-Up and Next Steps (5 Minutes)
Once your images are confirmed, clear, and complete, you can get dressed and continue your day.
Before leaving, we’ll explain:
- When you can expect results
- How you will receive them
- What happens next if additional imaging is needed
Our goal is to make the process seamless and stress-free.
Screening vs. Diagnostic Mammograms: Is There a Difference in Appointment Length?
Yes, the type of appointment does affect the length of your visit.
Screening Mammogram
A screening mammogram is your routine annual exam if you have no current breast symptoms.
These appointments are efficient and typically completed in 20 minutes or less.
Diagnostic Mammogram
A diagnostic mammogram is performed if:
- You have a breast lump or new symptom
- You were called back after a screening exam
- Additional evaluation is needed
These visits typically take 45–60 minutes. A radiologist reviews images in real time and may request specialized views or an ultrasound during the same visit for a comprehensive evaluation.
While longer, diagnostic visits provide answers before you leave, which many patients appreciate.
Tips for a Quick and Comfortable Appointment
We want your experience to feel more like self-care than a medical chore. To help things go smoothly, consider these tips.
- Dress for Success: Wear a two-piece outfit, such as a top and bottoms. This allows you to remain clothed from the waist down and only change into a robe for the upper body.
- Skip the Sprays: Avoid deodorants or perfumes on the day of your exam. If you forget, don’t worry. We provide wipes to easily remove them before the imaging begins.
- Manage Discomfort: Schedule your appointment for the week after your period when breast tissue is generally less sensitive.
When Should You Schedule Your Appointment?
For most women, annual screening mammograms should begin at age 40.
If you have:
- A family history of breast cancer
- Dense breast tissue
- A personal history of breast abnormalities
You may need earlier or additional screening. We recommend discussing timing with your primary care provider or OB-GYN.
The Breast Center of Maple Grove offers flexible scheduling to ensure you can find a time that works for your life.
