Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC), also sometimes called Infiltrative Ductal Carcinoma, is the most common type of breast cancer accounting for about 80% of all breast cancer cases. Invasive Ductal Carcinoma begins in the milk ducts and spreads to surrounding tissues. A woman of any age can be diagnosed with IDC however, it most often affects women who are age 55 or older. Invasive Ductal Carcinoma is also the type of breast cancer that most commonly affects men.
Symptoms of Invasive Ductal Carcinoma
IDC may not cause any symptoms at all and may be noticed for the first time on an annual mammogram. Or, one or more other symptoms may be present including:
- Lump in the breast or underarm area
- Swelling of the breast
- Changes of the nipple including redness or scaly skin
- Changes of the breast skin including irritation or dimpling
- Nipple discharge or pain
Diagnosing Invasive Ductal Carcinoma
Most Invasive Ductal Carcinomas are found during a mammogram. If a lump is felt during a clinical exam or other breast changes indicate that a patient may have IDC, a mammogram will be conducted to view the breast tissue closely. Additional exams may also be recommended to provide a more definitive diagnosis including:
- Diagnostic Mammogram – A diagnostic mammogram differs from a screening mammogram because it is used to evaluate one specific area of the breast in detail, as opposed to the whole breast.
- Breast Ultrasound – An ultrasound provides different information than a mammogram and can help physicians to see if a lump is solid or fluid-filled.
- Breast Biopsy – During a breast biopsy, a small sample of tissue is taken from the breast to be tested for the presence of cancer cells.
Early Detection of IDC
Annual screening mammograms are recommended for all women beginning at age 40. Regular mammograms help to detect breast cancer, like Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, at an earlier and more treatable stage.
